It's a remarkable and near impossible thing to rid a country of an autocrat. In my life, on a much smaller scale, I have had to rid myself of two. In both cases I was left empty, devoid of personality and life force. Autocrats require total devotion and lack of personality.
I am in awe that the US managed to do this. It would not have happened if Trump had not been so witheringly stupid. He would have sailed (or golfed) into a second term if he hadn't murdered so many Americans with a fucked COVID response.
Even so, this win would not have been possible without every single ingredient that went into it, because human beings are hardwired to follow autocrats and narcissists. In 2022 & 2024, I promise, the backlash against this victory will be terrifying.
In 2024, a wiser GOP will run a version of Trump who won't tweetstorm at 3AM. The Trump cultists will vote for him, and so will all those who voted Trump out, but also voted red down the rest of the ticket.
We weren't even a day into this victory before the Dems started dividing. We can't help ourselves. It sucks that the Dems AREN'T a cult, sometimes. They're pointing fingers and canceling one another already, forgetting that this win was just barely eeked out.
I'm trying to be positive. This happened. It's rare. It's good. But it won't last. It's already over.
That said, I had celebratory sushi and ice cream.
