I am not cheering Biden’s win, but I am exhaling a massive sigh of relief that we don’t have 4 more years of Trump. I am also heartened that an overt racist and sexist pig lost to a duo that included a woman of colour as the VP...
I cried today at this result, they weren’t tears of happiness or relief, instead I kept thinking how sad it is that this is the good outcome, call me unreasonable or uncompromising, too naive or too educated, too idealistic or too left, but simply put: I want more that this.
I really hope I am proven wrong and Biden takes the big decisions needed to address racial and economic inequality while acting to halt the climate emergency, but without significant reform to the massive money and corporate interests it’s hard to see how this happens...
I’m thankful the next US President won’t spout harmful, racist propaganda about the ‘China Virus’ esp so Aus pollies don’t think it’s ok to follow this approach, but I guess this is exactly my point, why the fuck should I have to be thankful for that...surely we can expect more?!
I appreciate there are a whole lot of folks in the US doing it tough, who have been directly and indirectly harmed by Trump - and who’s lives will improve because Biden won. I’m not saying the victory wasn’t what was needed, I’m saying imagine how much change is really needed...
Change doesn’t come from the people who get elected, it comes from people and movements getting organised (hopefully globally!) and forcing those in charge to listen and act in the interests of the community. Will that happen now? Who knows, but I bloody hope it does 💪🏽 #RantOver
