I want to go on a podcast one day and tell all the crazy stories about my life that led me here. I don't think people really realize how disconnected the south is from the rest of the country/world. Racism and homophobia were literally taught to us as kids.
For an example when gay marriage was getting legalized in NC my school told us we could either go with them to protest it as poster children or stay at school all day and do school work that the other students who went to protest didn't have to do.
I was taught that the confederate flag was the "southern flag". I legitimately had no idea of the racism that flag carried until I was like 17 years old. They always told us the civil war was mainly fought over "states rights" and that the freedom of the slaves was a byproduct.
