as attorney general of California, Kamala Harris enforced policies that targeted trans women, single & low-income mothers, incarcerated women, sex workers, etc—exercising a right to maim, deciding where, if, and how they could access services essential to their care & embodiment
criminalizing sex work and truancy specifically and disproportionately impacts poor, Black, brown, and LGBTQ women; it subjects them to increased surveillance, incarceration, difficult work & life schedules, relationships with their homes and workplaces, dependence on men, etc.
this practice where the state regulates the physical & spatial relations of your body, and makes essential determinations about bodily capacity (conditions of labour, denial of healthcare, limitations on movement, etc) is its “right to maim,” to exploit & debilitate populations.
As Jasbir Puar explains, “Debilitation [is] a practice of rendering populations available for statistically likely injury.... Maiming is a source of value extraction from populations that would otherwise be disposable.”
kamala harris fought hard for the view that gender-affirming care is not necessary in the cases of incarcerated trans women, so they should just suffer it out while trapped in prisons.
that discourse still infects our political climate in material ways. but yeah, pronouns in bio.
