I'm glad people are feeling happy tonight. Go for it. But today's call has done nothing to change my near-term outlook about hate and extremism in the US. The problem isn't going away, and in fact could get worse in the form of negative reactions to having Democrats in charge.

The far right, and even mainstream conservatism, has spent years hyping the idea that a Democratic regime will mean the end of America. It's to the point where a lot of people believe that to be true. Those apocalyptic notions can lead people to lash out and become violent.

So celebrate tonight, if that's your thing. But we still have a lot of work to do, and I don't expect that work to become easier anytime soon.
