Want a fun electoral fact I just learned? We have only ever had 6 elections in Canada where a party has gotten over 50% of the vote nation wide. Keep in mind, there have been many more with over 50% of seats in party, but only 6 elections where a majority of people voted for them
So starting things off, you'd guess that the first majority of popular vote would be our first Prime Minister, John A. MacDonald right? Probably also our first election? That would make sense wouldn't it? Well you would be completely wrong, the man never got more than 48.6%
No the first actual majority wasn't until 1900, 33 years after our first election in this country, and it was won by none other than Mr. 5 Dollar bill himself Wilfrid Laurier, who didn't even win the majority of the vote his first time, but during his bid for re-election
He won that election with a slim majority of 50.3% of the vote, but hey a majority is a majority.
Next on our list is... Laurier again in 1904 with an even bigger 50.9%. Not too shabby for someone who was now on his 3rd straight majority parliament win. His numbers just kept going up. He's the only person on this list who did it twice, so enjoy having a second picture of him.
Alright onto election number 3, halfway through this list already is a fellow who has a very nice sounding name, it's the guy on our 100, Robert Borden in 1917 with the largest Majority we will see in this thread, 56.93% of the populations vote.
I'm not personally a fan of the man for a number of reasons including how he handled the Winnipeg General strike, but you have to respect that he got the largest majority this country has ever seen by popular vote, especially considering the 1917 election was very bitter
