I am an AsstProf at UIC Nursing, health ethicist, health humanities scholar. Expertise in whiteness & white feminism in bioethics & health prof ed etc
UIC made allowance for a pause on the tenure clock through a COVID-19 Rollback.

Here is the policy: https://uofi.app.box.com/v/tenurerollbackc19
3/x
I applied, was denied on a technicality & told to re-apply on/after 8/16/2020. I re-applied 8/17/2020.

On 9/25/2020, a Friday, & ~6:10p, my DeptHead, supported by Dean, denied my COVID-19 Rollback.

I am one of two TT AsstProf at UIC who were denied.

How did we get here?

12/2016: I requested accommodations. Most weren't approved bc Univ Health Services won't approve unless they canđź‘€ disability.

No disabilities are invisible. If u can't see them, then you've no idea what to look for. Means that if you're a clinician then you're incompetent.

1st DeptHead told me to change my scholarship. Of course I didn't.

Was approved to create & teach a course (Decentering whiteness in bioethics). That DeptHead wanted me to use material that didn't upset her. Nope. Didn't do that.

October 24, 2018
While trying to us a 1-person all-gender restroom on the 9th fl of the UIC Nursing building, I was assaulted by 2 colleagues bc I am trans feminine. In my final (& successful) attempt to escape, I loudly said, "I am not a fucking sir!" https://twitter.com/Dr_Whomever/status/1318345877308702722

After uncontrollable crying for 30 minutes, I immediately wrote up what happened and sent it to our diversity officer (Lorna Finnegan; now dean of Loyola Nursing), who took over 3 wks to respond, even with repeated reminders.

November 9, 2018
My now current DeptHead, Crystal Patil, unannounced, censured me for violating the UI Code of Personal Conduct. Refused to listen to my statements abt being assaulted. Said it didn't matter. Apparently assault is fine conduct?

DeptHead has refused to answer why she was unrelenting in censuring me.

Title IX process, refused to seriously attend to my case until the union got involved in Summer 2019.

None there understood pronouns, gender ident, transmisia, that women could be violent, etc

March 8, 2019
Received a research award named after @JanetDeatrick, my dissertation chair! UIC Nursing's AssocDean of Research (Eileen Collins) purposefully changed my pronouns to misgender me & left off my research on whiteness.
I confronted her. She shrugged & walked away.

April/May 2019

One of the people who assaulted me was promoted to Director of the Dean's Office.
12/x

Needs repeating: one of the people who ASSAULTED ME was promoted to a leadership position.
13/x
Summer 2019

Got a meeting w/AssocChancellor of Access & Equity (where Title IX is, Caryn Bills), w/union observer, & Bills did not know how to describe gender or transphobia/transmisia. Tried to encourage me to not move forward.

July 19, 2019

New ExecAssoc Dean of UIC Nursing (Susan Corbridge) demands that I cease discussing my scholarship on the faculty listserv. Assuming she does not know what my scholarship is, I remind.

She ignores and names my expertise as "opinion."

August 15, 2019

Meeting to be abt my assault & violation of academic freedom. Different folx arrived than were invited. We (union & I) asked clarification.

Them: 1st meet w/boss when there's a problem.

Me: Why aren't others here?

Silence

Me: bc my DeptHead is

Silence
16/x
above meeting: found soln to assault (Bills & co never did their end); HR said she would look for why I was censured for being assaulted (she never did); all refused to talk abt academic freedom...except:

My DeptHead told me I need her approval on any decision abt my work.

Summer/Fall 2019

UIC Nursing Dean's Office attempts to block my efforts in arranging for @yvettedontlie's visit to give her amazing talks on #DecolonizeYourSyllabus, including one made for white women-dominated professions and using nursing as example.

Early 2020

One of people who assaulted me is recruited as an AsstDean to Loyola Nursing (by their Dean, Lorna Finnegan, mentioned in 7/x in this thread).

Yes this is another promotion, and by folx who know what she did.

early February 2020

Gave a talk at UMassAmherst Nursing. Caught national attention! See my bio for the kind comments from a hopefully-failed/failing venue. https://twitter.com/UMassWalker/status/1225090311782895621

March 2020

The inaugural UIC Nursing AssocDean Equity&Inclusion (Phoenix Matthews) said I was responsible for the conditions of me being assaulted on 10/24/2018. That no one at UIC Nursing values me/my scholarship & I should leave.

Demanded I not misrepresent their words.
21/x
March-May 2020

Strongly advocated against UIC Nursing's policies that were putting our students in danger of being killed (by COVID). Asked other faculty to drop unnecessary course requirements.
22/x
Spring 2020 courses:
Received the highest results ever from student evaluation of teaching ever. In both courses I enacted abolition, believed everything my students told me https://twitter.com/UMassWalker/status/1308846980714713088

June 2020

UIC Nursing faculty member used a racist slur. The other, senior faculty member did not stop the class and only made excuses. Students reached out to me.

Leadership decided to lecture the students on microaggressions. https://twitter.com/Dr_Whomever/status/1287439213340823552

July 15, 2020

Faculty town hall led by UIC Nursing Dean Terri Weaver, who multiply misgendered me and another person. Said things were going to change "because of #BLM." https://twitter.com/Dr_Whomever/status/1283582725912502278

August 2020

UIC Nursing faculty retreat (from addressing our own whiteness).

At least we have chair yoga? https://twitter.com/Dr_Whomever/status/1275117094858784782
27/x
cont retreat:

AssocDean Equity&Inclusion Phoenix Matthews demanded that any discussion of microaggressions or racism be done in such a way that it is safe for white people.

Matthews describes themself as Black, trans, and non-binary.
28/x
Matthews asks to hear from (white) faculty about how they felt when talking about microaggressions with others.
A junior Black woman faculty member challenged this--saying that it's more impt that white faculty know what they do to Black & other POC
29/x
Matthews stops this faculty member and tells her that we can hear from her later, but right now we're going to listen to the (white) people.
30/x
Several more people speak. I check in with the silenced faculty member. She affirms the silencing.

I finally get a word in and name what happened. A white faculty member cuts me off and tells me I'm wrong. Eventually Matthews tells me I'm wrong and that they know best.
31/x
I send an email to faculty about the violence we do and how we can do better.
32/x
The topic of surveillance tech and testing comes up. I add some great info, especially how these approaches are racist, ableist, and transmisic.
See a great thread here: https://twitter.com/UMassWalker/status/1292473420899328001
33/x
ExecAssocDean Susan Corbridge (see 1st mention in 14/x above) responds at some point, ignoring the complaints of racism, & says we must use this software bc at some point the students might have to subject others to this violence, so we should use this violence on them now.
