Republicans in Alabama have had....a time....during the Trump era. A brief thread:
Jeff Sessions was the first senator to endorse Donald Trump during the Republican presidential primary in 2016.
He left his Senate seat of two-plus decades to become Donald Trump's attorney general, his dream job and the consummation, in his view, of everything he'd ever worked toward.
That seat was then filled by a Democrat named Doug Jones, in large part because Alabama Republicans nominated probably the one Republican in all the state -- Roy Moore -- who couldn't get elected statewide. (Credible accusations of child molestation will do that, evidently.)
The next year, Jeff Sessions was unceremoniously ousted from his job as AG because despite being a bigger Trump devotee than anyone else in the president's cabinet, he committed the unforgivable sin of recusing himself from overseeing the Russia investigation.
After a series of failed post-administration endeavors, like an attempt to launch a pro-Trump think tank, Sessions tried to redeem himself by running for the Senate. As an aide told me at the time, Sessions was sincerely "offended" that a Democrat held his old seat.
Sessions, of course, lost to former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville, whose message was essentially: "Donald Trump endorsed me; I love Donald Trump; I am a human not named Jeff Sessions."
On Tuesday, Doug Jones (despite four-ish months of pointing out the more troubling elements of his opponent's record, including that he was once lost to Vanderbilt) lost decisively to Tuberville.
Today, Joe Biden is the president-elect of the United States, and people close to him say Doug Jones is among his top picks for attorney general.
Should Joe Biden actually nominate Doug Jones to the post, and should Doug Jones actually get confirmed as the 86th attorney general of the United States — well, I think at that point, we'll have no choice but to hand it to the writers. (Fin.)
