Today will go down as one of the greatest days in the history of American democracy.

Not because Biden won.

But because Trump is refusing to accept Biden’s win.

Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H.W. Bush passed the ultimate tests of their character when they accepted the will of the people to remove them as President.

But because these men passed their tests, democracy itself avoided being tested.

2/7
Until today.

An army is not truly tested before it sees battle.

And a democracy is not truly tested until it successfully transfers power from a leader fighting to avoid giving it up.

America has never seen that before now.

3/7
Trump may flail, he may sue, he may try to obstruct, he may tweet. (He *will* tweet.) He may have to be carried out of the White House around lunchtime on January 20.

But none of it matters.

4/7
There is no doubt that Joe Biden will relieve Trump of his duties and take over as President that day.

We don’t have to rely on Trump passing a character test for this to happen.

5/7
We can rely on our democracy which, in this moment, takes the form of our public institutions and of those who have sworn to defend the Constitution.

They show every sign of responding as they always have, despite the unprecedented situation.

6/7
This is a true test of American democracy, one it will pass.
