Today was SO needed. I am getting off this app again for a while as I am working on some big ideas and plans to continue being a menace to injustice and people that don’t like democracy. It was so great celebrating this win with you all...best wishes and all my love. x
The Americans can get rid of Trump, as we have seen today. Our reality here in Britain is that charlatans like him made irreparable changes to our very constitutional settlement. They will be able to reverse Trump's actions. We won't. And that is why our situation is grave.
My journey remains the same, one that centres democracy and the rule of law. But when our most powerful politicians have overseen crimes of which there is insurmountable evidence...on a scale that even Trump couldn't accomplish - it begs the question...how serious are you?
Britons remain apathetic and we can not have the success of American progressives because progressives here fail to even have basic conversations about injustice and unfairness without feeling attacked or outright angered by the suggestion of their complicity.
There is a lot of fear among white progressives, particularly when it comes to talking about injustice, specifically in regards to race. And that is because they are fully aware of the cognitive dissonance and dislike of the general public toward these issues. It is uncomfortable
Both for them and the other. So bigots, and those who proclaim themselves as 'disenfranchised' (to justify their dislike of progressive values) are centred, rather those that are victims of their (the bigots) bigotry or supposed 'misdirected' anger.
The focus becomes on appeasing the ones who are pained by progressive values like diversity or welfare rather than those who are pained by the lack of those values (and policy). And this misdirection of energy and resources is, in my opinion, due to the allure of whiteness.
And by that I mean in the collective belief in that it is the Englishman that should be a focus rather than ideologies and belief systems & community. Still, in Britain, electoral politics centres around the back and forth between what is 'comfortable' for only one type of man.
And this discomfort is so great that any mass movement akin to the kind we saw among African Americans, Latinos, muslims and even white progressives for Biden, here in Britain would be seen as a direct threat to that norm. It is why they are bastardised & ruined here.
The danger to Britain's progressive movement, in my mind, is a lack of focus and a misdirection of resources toward appeasing those who do not share our values and a failure to build a progressive machinery in the way that the democrats have built.
But also in the way that the right in this country have, much of which I exposed and have worked to help people understand. But theirs is a machinery lined with law-breaking, cheating, lobbying and all that is not suited for democracies.
While organisations in America organise and push for change (sometimes very badly) there is at least an ambition to make systemic change - even if performative at times. Here in Britain, the CEOs, editors and designers I have met fail to recognise this reality and weakly cower.
There is a lack of ambition and a lack of motivation precisely because mass movements that have been built are shunned, put aside and under appreciated. Our media is dangerously conservative, our publishing houses are disgustingly right-wing and our culture oligarchs remain Tory.
And I think changing that requires a much deeper reflection on our part. I don't know...but we have not addressed or recognised our pain and strife as being as dramatic or corrupt as America. When in fact it is most definitely more corrupt.
Something I have always said is...the evil of the Trump's administration is most apparent in its lack of respect for the rule of law and most importantly democracy. The British government hasn't just disrespected democracy, they have proactively destroyed its sanctity and purity.
FINALLY (lol) before I go...there is a misunderstanding among many that Trump is an outlier - but he is a very real and understandable reaction to what we have been fighting for for decades. Integrity, equality, diversity, justice, kindness.
And Trump WILL happen again because that is how white supremacy works. It is a system built upon the subjugation of the less fortunate, be they of colour like myself or white and working class. And in Britain, we are nowhere near even scratching the surface of understanding it.
