Megan Weaver who, like Harris, is a Howard alum and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority member, says that the news of Harris’ victory is “a monumental moment ... I felt like a child finding out certain things are achievable and possible”
Lots of members of the Divine Nine are out here. Lloyd Marshall, a recent alum, says this election’s outcome is a “positive step in the right direction. The world is a real messed up place ...but every step counts”
Shanel Wilson, who graduated Howard in 2016, says that “it’s just amazing that the first woman Vice President comes from Howard University.” She came to The Yard bc “we didn’t have a homecoming this year bc of COVID. It’s like we’re finally having a homecoming.”
Tralonne Shorter (in the pink) is a Howard alum and AKA member who drove from Arlington bc it’s “a historic day, a day of joy and relief for us all and I couldn’t think of any better place but to come with my son to my alma mater.” Her cousin met them here, too
Current Howard student Malik Mack (in the jean jacket) is excited, and also laughs that Harris as VP will definitely increase bragging about Howard. “Y’all thought it was bad before ...”
One more convo to share from today w/ students Symirah, Britney, and Nia.
Symirah came “to celebrate Kamala, to celebrate the 1st Black woman—the 1st woman, the 1st Black woman, the 1st Asian woman —to be a VP, and to celebrate my HBCU and to celebrate my Blackness”

Britney says that The Yard is an especially resonant place to celebrate good news: “This is home to us. Whenever we want to feel close to home, we come to The Yard.”
Thanks to everyone who shared their feelings of joy and excitement with me today, and to those who followed along at home.
