I'm already seeing spin on CNN about 'normal republicans rejecting Donald Trump'.

We had record turnout for Republicans under Trump.

All evidence is that Republicans were nervous about Trump in 2016, but after 4 years of his leadership the party liked him MORE not less.
Donald Trump has completely reinvigorated the Republican voter base.

Donald Trumps approval rating is 1 point higher than it was the day he was inaugerated, and his in party approval rating is six points higher than that day, for a total of 95%.

NINETY FIVE PERCENT.
George W Bush's approval rating, the week after 9/11 within the Republican party, was ALSO 95%.

I want you to really take a moment and think about that.
The Republicans, heading into an election Trump was knowingly likely to lose for which he held some blame, had the same approval as George W Bush with Republicans as the towers were still smoldering.
I'm going by Gallup's generic approval and in party approval polls, they've done it consistently for decades, same methodology.
This should be horrifying. Trump probably lost some voters due to Corona related issues.

This would have been been an absolute demolition if there weren't a quarter million dead people to lay at Trump's feet to scare off a tiny chunk of non-Republican Trump voters.
The dialog now is the 'need to unite the country' and bring both sides together, but how on Earth is any decent administration supposed to reconcile unity with a base that likes Trump as much after a quarter million dead Americans as George Bush the day after a terrorist attack?
I'm done, here I'll cite the sources:

1) Trump in party approval now,
2) In party approval at his Inauguration,
3) George W Bush in party approval week after 9/11
