All, I'm about to sign off for the day. I think I need to relax some.
Having said that--
Four years ago, as it dawned on us that Trump had won, my wife and children were distraught over what they feared would happen.
Most of what did actually happen was actually worse than I had
thought possible at the time, but I said this to them:
"The work of making America better and making the world better is the work of ages. It is not, and never was, for us to win that fight, and it damn sure isn't for us to surrender to grief or despair. Have faith, for America
is a country full of good and decent people who generally strive to be better.
We will persevere and we we will come back from this."
I know I said those things because my daughter actually recorded it to play back.
I was speaking to myself as much as to them.
She played it for
me a couple times, when things felt particularly dark.
Today, we find ourselves in a better place.
But there is a lot of work to do. We have a lot recent damage to undo, but we also have a lot of work still undone from before the Trump era.
We have to help our fellow Americans
explain to us why they were willing to forsake basic decency and embrace the obvious nascent fascism that Trump promised. We need to listen and learn.
They are Americans too, and in many cases, they are our family members.
I still love them as I love my country with all my heart.
And so I say to you, in a different context what I said to my children that sad night four years ago:
The work of making America better and making the world better is the work of ages. It is not, and never was, for us to win that fight and it damn sure isn't for us to surrender
to grief or despair. Have faith, for America is a country full of good and decent people who generally strive to be better.
I'll never stop loving my country and being proud of her with all my heart.
