Talk with my priest this past Thursday left me with an image I'm still absorbing, want to share it with you
He applied the parable of the sower and the seeds to the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the seed and we are the soil
We can do various things to prepare the soil so that the seed can take root and flourish
So confession, prayer, fasting, virtuous deeds, these things do not make us "worthy" of the Eucharist; nothing does. They just allow Jesus to take root more deeply in our hearts
Taking the image a little further, this means that we can see Monday through Saturday as preparation for Sunday -- tilling and fertilizing the soil
Relatedly/unrelatedly, I think I'm cool with the idea that, as in the early church, there is indeed such a thing as a mortal sin, but that category is reserved for apostasy, adultery, murder, and maybe one or two others
