It took place in present-day Iraq, in
the 9th century
 
این قیام در عراق امروزی و در قرن نهم
میلادی اتفاق افتاد.

In reality, there were 3 Zanj rebellions

در واقع سه قیام زنگیان وجود داشت.

The first two rebellions did not last very long, and information about them is scarce

دو قیام اول خیلی طول نکشیدند، و درباره‌شان اطلاعات ناچیزی در دست است.

The third rebellion is the one that scholars have remembered and written about the most

قیام سوم بیشتر مکتوب شده و محققان بیش از دو قیام دیگر درباره‌اش نوشته‌اند.

It was in 869 AD. The Black laborers declared themselves free and took up arms against the ruling powers.  They were strengthened by others coming to their cause – including Persians and Arabs who also recognized the corruption and injustices of their society.

سال ۸۶۹ میلادی (۲۴۸ هجری شمسی) بود. کارگران سیاه‌پوست خود را آزاد اعلام کرده و علیه طبقه حاکم اسلحه به دست گرفتند. جنبش آن‌ها با پیوستن دیگران، از جمله ایرانیان و اعرابی که فساد و بی‌عدالتی‌های جامعه‌شان را می‌دیدند، قدرت گرفت.

Ultimately, after 15 years of fighting and independence, the Zanj rebellion was crushed

در نهایت، پس از ۱۵ سال جنگ و استقلال، قیام زنگیان سرکوب شد.

Historians have pegged the rebellion as one about class, and the increasing divide in living conditions between the ruling class and those of the enslaved laborers.

تاریخ‌نویسان انگیزه این قیام را اختلاف طبقه اجتماعی و شکاف عظیمی می‌دانند که بین شرایط زندگی طبقه حاکم و کارگران به بردگی گرفته شده وجود داشت.

Others have analyzed it in terms of religion, since the rebellion was led by a religious dissident against the Abbasid Caliphate

برخی دیگر هم این قیام را از دید مذهب تحلیل کرده‌اند، چرا که قیامی بود که رهبر آن یکی از مخالفان مذهبی خلیفه عباسی بود.

But what if we used this as a lesson to think about coming together to imagine our future – what would it look like if Black protestors were joined by non-Black people to recreate a society shaped by justice and free of corruption? What are the possibilities then?

چه می‌شد اگر ما این قیام را به عنوان درسی می‌دیدیم تا فکر کنیم چطور می‌توانیم با همدیگر همراه شویم تا آینده‌مان را تصور کنیم.

چه می‌شد اگر مردمان غیر‌سیاه به مبارزان سیاه‌پوست می‌پیوستند تا جامعه‌شان را از نو بسازند، جامعه ای بر پایه عدالت و خالی از فساد؟ با چنین تصوری، چه چیزهایی ممکن می‌شد؟
