FEW THOUGHTS ON WHAT WILL COME: A THREAD. 2020 was the year I watched the whole country turn into one of my mandatory diversity classes. The same books they made me read became bestsellers; the same nonsense they taught me started coming out of the mouths of Dem candidates. 1/x
(If I live to be 100, I will never forget the moment I heard Joe Biden say 'systemic racism'. The words of my Gender Studies professor in an 80 yr old mouth were just so weird. I shivered.) I expect it to get significantly worse. Kamala Harris is fully on board, to the point 2/x
of giving her pronouns as a candidate (another bit of campus life come to mainstream politics). Whether she actually ascends in the next four years or not, it's clear she will be a huge part of JB's administration. Both of them have "misspoken" a few times. "The Harris 3/x
administration, together with Joe Biden..." and Biden's "I'm her running mate" and such. They may or may not have been pandering, but if they were, they will have to continue to pander in who they choose to staff their administration. Many issues of real significance, esp. in 4/x
education (1619 project, anti-racism doctrines, title 9, etc., in particular) and medicine (like rules around puberty blockers and who can compete in which sport) will continue to change in the campus direction. I want to stress that I am a complete idiot and many people who 5/x
are a lot smarter than I am are utterly convinced that voting in Biden/Harris is the way to stop this. I will gleefully and joyfully revel in the beauty of having been wrong if Wokeness is stopped in its tracks. On the presumption that it won't, though, here's a few tips for 6/x
staying sane. 1) Find your people. I was in therapy all through college and having someone I could talk to who would affirm that I wasn't crazy, that the idea of 'demisexuality' (basically, not wanting to fuck people you don't care about already) as an 'alternative' sexuality 7/x
was as fucked up as I thought--that was invaluable. 2) Don't let anyone gaslight you. Many, including (I suspect; I hope I'm wrong) many who thought voting in B/H would fix this stuff, will deny what's happening. You're not crazy. The emperor is not in fact wearing a spiffy 8/x
new outfit. 3) Understand it. The work of @ConceptualJames and @HPluckrose in their book, Cynical Theories, is a Rosetta stone. It explained my campus experience to me with precision. Read it; YOU LIVE ON CAMPUS NOW, TOO. 4) Learn to laugh at it. With each new entrenchment of 9/x
Wokeness into our lives, say to yourself, "Well, it could be worse. They could be writing mean tweets." Then let yourself laugh at the stupidity of it all. 5) Take care of yourself. Meditation is an invaluable tool for perspective and putting a little distance between your 10/x
thoughts/feelings and actions. 6) Use accurate language. They're going to use "rioters" for protestors who pound on a window and shout and "peaceful protestors" for arsonists w/literal buildings burning in background. You don't have to. Tell the truth. Nobody can stop you. 11/x
7) Remember that you are ultimately responsible for your life, even the parts of it that aren't your fault. Analogy: your life is your house. If other people break in and shit on the floor, no matter how unfair it is, your only choice is to clean it up or live in a house 12/x
with piles of shit on the floor. WE CAN DO THIS. I got through college. You're all about to have a college experience. It's doable. It's manageable. We'll survive. And who knows? Maybe the "vote Biden to STOP wokeness" people will turn out to be right; that'd be great. đŸ€žđŸ€žđŸ€ž
