Since this post has started a ‘conversation,’ I’d like to reiterate that I amended @mmcphate’s map of California’s population weight in our country and to highlight, right or wrong, how it’s not commensurate in the United States Senate.
I’m glad it started a conversation, but we can certainly keep it civil. The collection of colonies during the framing of our nation between 1776 and 1787 were nothing like the collection of states that we are today. But...
What is still true is that the founders most certainly did not want large population centers to overpower states with smaller population. Does that still work today? It depends on who you ask. We have a bicameral legislature that each work in different ways. Yet...
Some would say one chamber - the one w/ equal representation for each state, big/small, has more power than the other. And if either chamber can’t agree or reconcile (or a bill cannot even get a vote, as has happened numerous times in the past) then how fair is that? You tell me.
The country has changed a lot in 240+ years. And our constitution has as well. Black people - dragged to this country in chains - are recognized as fully human now (as opposed to 3/5ths), women have been voting for 100 years. Alcohol was prohibited and made legal again. And...
The Senate has changed as well. Over time. From state legislatures choosing Senators to direct voting. I’m glad we’re having the conversation about it. I’m not here to advocate anything. Just take the temperature. And apparently a lot of folks have an opinion about it. /end
