The Gbaramatu Genocide: May 15th, 2009.

In 2009 oil production had been cut significantly by militant activities of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) in their fight for justice, so the Yaradua government decided to go after Government Ekpemupolo.
The government felt he would be at the Ama seikumor festival which is an annual festival in Gbaramatu.

What did they do? Yaradua ordered the mobilisation of all branches of Nigeria’s armed forces.

The Nigerian Navy contributed two warships; The NNS Nwanba and NNS Obula.
The Nigerian airforce contributed helicopter gunships. The Nigerian army contributed ground forces and its battle tanks.

The festival had started when the armed forces swooped in. Complete encirclement. The army entered and blocked the land borders. The navy blocked the waterway
The airforce gave air support. Then they opened fire on everyone. Bombs were dropped. The population of Gbaramatu was about 20,000. Estimates have put the dead at about 10-20% of the Gbaramatu population.

The Palace and school were shot up. Nothing was spared.
A student lost her mother and 6 brothers in the attack.

No one was held responsible. No one resigned. No one went to jail. The people of Gbaramatu got a court judgment that has still not been paid till date. The greatest humanitarian crisis in Gbaramatu since the Civil war.
Government Ekpemupolo was not killed or captured in that attack.

The Vice President to Umaru Yaradua, was Goodluck Jonathan.
