Just over a year ago, ICU doc Owen Mooney was working to try and save my dad’s life. It was a blessing: I’ve known Owen forever. His wife was my first editor. I remember when he got into med school. Now, he’s sick with COVID-19 from the front lines. https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/special/coronavirus/icu-doc-sick-with-covid-opens-up-572967762.html">https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/special/c...
Whenever I read about risk to hospital staff in the pandemic, Owen was the person I pictured. Made it real to me. I wanted so badly for all the St. B ICU staff to be safe. They’re truly putting themselves at risk every day to be the last line of defence to save lives.
(Also, I remember thinking it was a grimly funny peak Winnipeg moment when we went into this very difficult family meeting about dad and everyone is like “this is Dr. Mooney” and I’m all “yeah hi Owen.”)
I turned this thread into a whole column for today’s paper. https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/special/coronavirus/truth-and-consequences-572999221.html">https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/special/c...
