This is the most interesting part of his character concept, once you get stuck into reading the books. The fact that Danny spent his formative years in K'un-Lun means he's got that dual culture experience. He doesn't feel a connection to America, he's an outsider in K'un-Lun.
The more I learn about Chinese legend, and about the Iron Fist comics, the more appreciation I have for the amount of effort and genuine cultural appreciation put into this world. It reminds me of the director's commentary on the Doctor Strange movie. (definitely worth a listen)
A very interesting bit of reasoning given to a stylistic flair I'd like to see return to the comics. I believe it also helped clue the reader into the martial arts madness they would have found obscure, exotic, even obtuse. Reading Danny's thought process as he performs feats.
The concept of a superhero's mask being their true face is so often discussed as to be cliché, but it's interesting nonetheless. Especially when explored in this way. I also find it notable that Danny's mask is yellow with heavily winged eyes. Make of that what you will.
(I'm pointing this out purely for how interesting it is. I'm not trying to draw any conclusions, and I have absolutely zero interest in baseless speculation about authorial intent. The effect is separate from the intent. Also there are variant masks in green and blue. So, yeah.)
