1/15 "In your own best interest"
Out of curiosity I wanted to experiment with @CelsiusNetwork so I started depositing few satoshis in May 2019 and more and more afterward. Until last week when the @Mashinsky vs @PeterMcCormack little match took place. Alex stance did worry me.
2/15 Having being caught with few bitcoins in the MtGox debacle I learnt my lesson a while ago: not your keys, not your coins. So when Celsius value proposition came around I was curious to try but didn't want to waste more hard earned bitcoins. I've been very careful.
3/15 In order to try to monitor any possible sign of weird behavior I setup Google news alerts, monitored their twitter accounts and stood alert to any weird (to me) thing happening.
A bit too paranoid you may say.
4/15 Along the road there were some hiccups but nothing too worry about too much. Their app evolved not super smoothly but in an acceptable and understandable way.
The interests were payed as promised on time every Monday and the trust was slowly building.
5/15 It's end of December 2019 and I am planning to withdraw in order to participate in the "proof of key" twitter campaign. I am away from home with little connectivity and Celsius 2fA stop working. They want you to send video with ID and do the KYC thing all over again...
6/15 Account not accessible! The ghost of MtGox is floating behind me. Not too much money would be lost if history is repeating but the opportunity cost wouldn't be minor.
Anyway I wasn't able to withdraw and after being KYCed again I eventually got my access back.
7/15 The first crack in the trust is there now. Few weeks and months pass by, COVID1984 comes around... Well at least Celsius seems to be improving. Interest are higher (6.2%) up to 5 btc deposited. Not too bad. Payments are on time. Alex is a great communicator. I relax a bit.
8/15 Rewards. 🚨 What the...?! Why are you renaming Interests into Rewards?!?! You've called them Interests for more than a year! Nobody calls interests, rewards! Is this a loyalty program? It's September 2020.
9/15 The "Reward" re-branding is like the MtGox ghost 👻tapping harder and harder on my shoulders. My trust in @CelsiusNetwork is vanishing. I am more and more worried that something is not right. Maybe I am just paranoid. But I have to trust my guts.
10/15 And here we are. Last week @PeterMcCormack and @Mashinsky cross their swords, Alex allegations sound really weird to me and his behavior is totally unexpected and surprising. That's it. I'm not taking any risk.
Withdraw.
11/15 The withdrawal process isn't the smoothest one but manageable. I mean. It would have been a dream back in '14...But here's another alarming sign. You MUST use the same address if you do multiple withdraw for any reason. Bad. If you wanna change address then you've to wait.
12/15 You have to wait 24 hours before you can use the new address. Crazy. Nope. I don't like this either. Eventually I manage to withdraw my BTCs but I leave just a few in there for a further test with change of address the day after.
13/15 Mixing. My BTCs usually go through a mixer before reaching my cold storage. Few days later the final surprise and, at least for me, the last nail into the Celsius' coffin:
14/15 It was quite easy to unlock my account but the trust was gone. I understand their regulatory constrains but this email is wrong in so many ways IMHO. I took everything out because I was uncomfortable after the recent events. I got my BTCs back. They're safe now.
15/15 If you are thinking to use one of these services to gain some BTC "rewards", be aware of the context and the risks. There is a future for lending and borrowing but maybe it is not now. Not yet. I am not taking the risk.
After all we all learnt from @aantonop: NYKNYC.
