Halloween feels like the right time to celebrate the groundbreaking and timeless work of Octavia Butler. Though she is primarily known as a science fiction author, her poignant novels incorporated horror and created dimensions where Black women lived at the center.
Here is a list of sci-fi/horror films and shows you can watch to celebrate Butler's legacy.

See You Yesterday - A young woman and her friends create a time machine to bring back her brother when he’s killed by a police officer. This film includes a nod to the novel ‘Kindred.’
His House - A modern twist on the classic haunted house horror genre. Wunmi Mosaku lights up the screen as a refugee looking for a safe space for her family as they are tormented by a sinister force in her home.
Vampire vs. The Bronx - Coco Jones proves why everyone needs a Black woman on their team when vampires invade the neighborhood she lives in.
Raising Dion is a binge-worthy title for the whole family. A mother discovers her son’s superpowers and must protect him from being exploited while investigating her husband’s death.
The Girl with All the Gifts - One exceptional girl could offer a new beginning for a world near its end due to a zombie onslaught.
The Perfection - Logan Browning stars as the new kid in school in this psychological thriller. She soon finds out the horrific cost of being excellent when she is befriended by a jealous classmate.
You can’t curate a list of badass women in horror without including Michonne from The Walking Dead. Her character was easily one of the most enjoyable out of all the seasons.
Jill Marie Jones in Ash vs. Evil Dead -- Jill slays ghosts, demons, and LEWKS in this action-packed thriller. From Toni Childs to evil slayer. The RANGE!!
Kellita Smith in Z Nation - She was already pretty tough as Aunt Wanda in The Bernie Mac show, so it’s no surprise she’s able to handle a few zombies in Z Nation.
Vampire Diaries - Kat Graham uses her powers as a witch to defeat blood-thirsty vampires.
While we're on witches, it does not get much spookier than The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - and Tati Gabrielle provides the looks and the scares.

Happy Halloween!
