Friends, I am so delighted to introduce a new Phish show into circulation!
This tape has been sitting in a vault for over 30 years, and is finally seeing the light of day
There was no known recording or setlist of 8/23/89...until now
A clip of the monstrous Bowie jam:

Now, the story behind this recording and how it was unearthed
This show was recorded live by Tom Buckland, who was the sound engineer for The Living Room in Providence, RI in the 80s.
About a month ago, my band hired Tom to record & mix our album and one night during a session break, the topic of Phish came up

Tom mentioned that he mixed Phish when he was working at that venue in the late 80s, and still had the tape in storage somewhere
We agreed how cool that was and moved on. A few weeks later, Tom came by the studio and dropped off a CD...

“Here’s that Phish show I mixed way back when, enjoy!” he said
After geeking out to the generally superb quality of both his recording and the band’s playing, I listened to the few existing Living Room tapes and learned that Tom may have placed uncirculated material in my hands

I called Tom, repeatedly thanked him for this piece of history that he captured, and asked why he held on to the tape for so long
Tom said on that night in the summer of ‘89, he was experimenting with a new cassette system that the venue installed

It was his first time live recording through that setup, and really liked the way the tape came out, so he held on to it as a little personal achievement
Tom’s not really a phan and hadn’t run into anyone who would have had interest in this tape, until he met me

This recording is also extra special because it is a mix of the monitors (what the band heard on stage that night) and the FOH mix (what the audience heard)
Tom remembered that the band didn’t want any of Fish’s toms in the monitors, so those were mixed in from FOH, for example

Now Tom didn’t remember the exact date of the show. But he recalled that Max Creek canceled on that gig, and Phish filled in
A huge thank you to the great @shapsio, who was able to find the old flyer from 8/23/89, which advertised the bands’ flip flop and confirmed the date!
