Congress makes the broadest laws. Cities make the most specific laws. And California lawmakers are somewhere in between.

Most states have a bicameral state leg that mirrors our federal government. The State Assembly is one of two houses in our California state legislature.
The State Assembly can introduce bills on anything about California. They typically go to a committee and if they pass, they move on to the full assembly. Bills have to pass both houses to go to the governor and then he has the opportunity to sign or veto them.
Our State Assembly can act on pretty much anything affecting Californians. From housing to healthcare to jobs to agriculture, these lawmakers have tons of power and opportunity.

For an idea of the issues they cover, check out this list of committees: https://www.assembly.ca.gov/committees
Southern California Assemblymembers have a reputation for not being as progressive as their Northern California counterparts. Worth paying attention to these races in this election.
