I don’t have any particular insights into law school, but I do have specific practices for writing reference letters.
1.This is part of my work, and so this is never a favour, or ‘extra’ or special. It is my responsibility.

1.This is part of my work, and so this is never a favour, or ‘extra’ or special. It is my responsibility.
2.When I receive a request, I send the following email so I can write the strongest letter possible.
3.I open letters by stating my authority and legitimacy (Assistant Prof, research interests, and how I know the student, date, courses, supervision etc). I then move into my argument for the student.
4.A strong reference letter has the same attributes as a strong argument – claim

4. con& #39;t. ... "First, her research skills are strong... Her paper “TITLE” – summary ... This level of sophisticated analysis bodes well for continued scholarly excellence”. The summary points to how the claim applies to the targeted program.
5. In references for graduate work, I connect past work to potential for future work. “Mr. Hassam’s UG honour’s thesis explored the Brazil’s soy exports [situate contribution] … his MA research proposal builds on this work by … In sum, Mr. Hassan’s research shows…”
6. Same for prof. program applications. "Ms. Ho’s choice of __Program is ideal for her skill set and ambitions … Evidence (bilingual, past work experience etc) … In sum, Ms. Ho’s scholarly practice & past experience will hold her in good stead as she takes on the challenges ...
