Discursively, the right is trying to conflate “critical race theory,” “intersectionality,” “woke,” and “cancel culture” as this one conglomerate belief held by the median Democrat politician. It’s intellectual dishonest and sometimes laughable.
No one seriously believes Trump or Cotton or [insert odious GOP official] understands anything about the ideas in critical race theory or intersectionality. Instead, they become boogieman talking points meant to whip up white backlash.
The right-wing media and increasingly median GOP elected officials love to pretend the average Democrat is taking their cues from online leftists (if only!), but it’s actually the GOP who has adopted right-wing Reddit talking points as a governing philosophy.
Ben Shapiro and Andrew Sullivan — extremely online, lying bigots who decry “incivility” whenever they’re told racist pseudoscience and transphobic non-medical drivel aren’t legitimate sources of knowledge — are really the touchstones for the modern GOP.
It’s very easy to say and prove that the right is fully of hypocrisy and grifters. It’s an easy dunk (and one I often take).

@AdamSerwer AdamSerwer’s point about “white political correctness” is valuable here: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/vox/the-ezra-klein-show/e/57640954
We’re in the midst of a pandemic that has overwhelming impacted Black and brown communities and the GOP’s response has been to decry CRT. It’s about white grievance politics and whatnot. 7/?
I don’t think this move goes away after 45. Not sure what happens to it, but I think Jamelle Bouie is right (as usual) here: https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1322211855369207810
I think educators should be aware of coded language & how bigots use phrases to signal ideas to each other. I don’t think we should be caught off guard; we should know how the language we use is (mis)interpreted by those who want to exacerbate inequities and injustices. /Fin
Addendum: At 21 I was convinced that if I studied the religious right I could beat it (ha!). I was naive & wrong. That said, right-wing online discourse becomes GOP talking points (see Ted Cruz, Josh Howley, the GOP twitter), so we should at least know the rhetorical moves.
