[thread] I was being harassed by Peter Neumann last night, who is trying to get me in trouble with my employer. This thread is going to discuss this very awkward and threatening behaviour which I’m looking to submit as a formal complaint./1 https://twitter.com/PeterRNeumann/status/1322286388331642880
Last week, Neumann said terrorism is a cause of France’s implosion. When I questioned him, he asked if I at least condemn the killing of innocents. This is entirely inappropriate, and indicative of the Islamophobia Muslims navigate when requesting nuance/2 https://twitter.com/Tarek_Younis_/status/1320060180520947715
Potentially festering over my thread all week, Neumann posted a barrage of tweets last night requesting my “thoughts” on Nice, all while tagging Middlesex University (my employer). This is absolutely wild. I ask him why he tagged my employer, he answers “Why be afraid?”/3
This is clear bullying, given fear was his unprompted expectation. But given he’s a counterterrorism professor questioning me (a Muslim) on a terrorist attack while tagging my employer, this is not ‘simply’ abuse. In fact, it’s a pretty open and callous threat to my employment /4
One of the reasons I got into psychology was my experience of ethnic minorities being bullied. But consider what it means for a counterterrorism professor to tag your employer in a successive number of tweets, randomly asking for random “thoughts” on a highly sensitive topic/5
Imagine someone asks you to have an “honest” conversation, but in the same breath, calls your boss out of the blue to be present. This is the most aggressive request for a conversation. What can this be, other than a power play and a threat?/6
The implication is clear: with your employer involved you better A) engage me on the subject of my choosing (coercion) and B) consider your answer very wisely given the political climate surrounding Muslims./7
I am astounded he would do thi after our racist interaction last week. The message is clear: racialised Muslims asking for nuance is taboo. The request to recognise ALL forms of violence, not just those committed by heinous killers, merits questioning and employer tagging./8
I must also admit: the worst part about this is that Neumann has absolutely nothing to fear from his prejudicial and childish behaviours, while I was struck uncomfortable wondering if I—an early-career academic—could lose a stable income for daring to request some nuance. /9
I have zero respect for Peter Neumann or his ilk who agree with his behaviour. Forget about professional conduct—he’s revealed glaring character flaws, a profound intellectual deficiency in racism, a callous display of childishness, and above all, an abuse of power./10
This guy obviously should not be near any field that deals with extremism or the Far-Right, when he clearly is so oblivious to his own abuse of power and knee-jerk Islamophobia. I would hope people reading this will reflect long and hard on where they get their knowledge from./11
I considered keeping all this to myself—what’ll come of pointing this out? We’ve seen this before, and nothing comes of it but more abuse, as we see. But decided to share my thoughts because, if he’s bullying me (a lecturer) in this way, who knows what he can do to students./12
To end, a crazy but unsurprising coincidence: I literally have a chapter coming out in a book (published by MUP) on this exact subject: the racist abuse Muslims experience to condemn Muslim violence! Do support the book, you can find it here /end https://manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526151476/
It seems @PeterRNeumann is attempting to erase his history of abuse. Here's the main thread he just deleted, here for posterity
I have many more pics, in case he thinks he can just delete his violent abuse of power in arbitrarily trying to get me in trouble with my employer. If anyone has others and more, do just post below
I would like to thank everyone for their show of support and solidarity, I can't possibly like/retweet everyone but it was very heartening to see in a moment where I questioned if my employment was possibly at risk because of @PeterRNeumann abuse of power /1
@PeterRNeumann is now trying to position himself as victim as if I called him racist out of nowhere. But I won't delete my tweets like he did, and you can follow the threads to see the truth of our interactions/2
The real abuse in our interaction wasn't just the gall of his request of me to randomly condemn the heinous killing when I asked him to elaborate on France's implosion. And then when he did it again with Nice. It was his tagging of my employer! /3
There is no possible justification to tag my employer in a totally unprompted query on the killings, and I would love to see anyone try to justify this act. This was an absolutely clear and unequivocal attempt to leverage his position to get me in trouble-a threat./end
