I sought opinions of people who follow my Facebook page on what might have contributed to the sharp increase in rape cases and what must be done to deal with this problem. The following came out clearly from the respondents.
1. Easy access to pornography. Some respondents said pornography which can be accessed at a touch of a button has reinforced the seeing of women as sexual tools and has to an extent made some of the sexual taboos such as incest, rape and sexual slavery seem normal.
2. Drug and substance abuse. Some respondents also argued that the availability and easy access to drugs and substances in this country has contributed a lot to the sharp increase in rape cases.
3. An increase in sexual enhancing drugs and their advertisement. Another section argued that a day does not pass on social or mainstream media without hearing of an advert on where to access sexual enhancing drugs such as Gondolosi etc. These have led to a negative influence.
4. Finally, an issue of dressing popped up. People argued that much as you ought not to blame the victim and much as we have seen extreme cases where toddlers have been raped, living in an environment of sexual perverts that we are demands one not to give them an excuse.
My take:
There is an ideal world, we all aspire to be in and there is a real world which is not ideal where we are living in. Being pro-active or following the prevention is better that cure adage is the first step for me. Let's ensure our girls are with people we trust.

Secondly, if we are to get drunk especially ladies, let's ensure that we are close to people we trust or in company of friends we are close to. Let's dress the way we want but be conscious of the environment we are in too. As it is prevention remains the best.
While ensuring our own safety, then we can go and fight the perverts and the powers that be to slap the rapists with stiff punishments. Otherwise the streets are not safe and the primary responsibility of being safe is in our hands. #SayNoToRape
