A friend with kid interested in "animation" asked me where to start. The kid learned Scratch programming + interactive so far.
First suggestion is to recommend iPad + Apple Pencil and good animation app.
But no iPad or desktop stylus yet, so maybe free animation app like Pencil. I also recommend Blender and Grease Pencil to start with.
However I also wonder what's the kid expectation of "animation"? Anime? AAA games mocap animation? Disney or Pixar style? Cartoon? Stop motion?
I could just jump with teaching how to pose 3D Simple Character Rig but very likely he should start with Storyboard and 2D flipbook animation with video or AR presentation.
Very likely studying basic drawings and shooting video, tracing or animate basic frame by frame doodle.

I wish she invest on something like stylus though.
