In other news my mom is a seagull egg for Halloween
This has reached a wider audience than I expected so I feel I should share *why* she’s a seagull egg 😂
We’re Iñupiaq from Arctic Alaska. In the spring we gather eggs as part of our subsistence harvest (always sure to leave one in the nest if we are successful.)
This is a welcome change in our diet after a long cold winter, something that we look forward to each year. Practices like these are important to our livelihood and spirit as Iñuit*
*This is complex & I won’t dig deeper in this thread, but bottom line is that seagull eggs make a lot of people in the Arctic very happy & I’m glad this made many of you smile, too.
For those interested about learning why subsistence harvests are important for us, here’s a resource from ICC Alaska: https://iccalaska.org/wp-icc/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Food-Security-Summary-and-Recommendations-Report.pdf
