./ Just how ignorant are some of our woke politicians? Here's @MrJohnNicolson celebrating today 5 "mature democracies" for their gender laws. One of them is Malta, a spectacularly corrupt basket case whose govt just happens to be accused of involvement in killing a journalist.👇
./ John thinks of himself as an expert on almost everything so he probably didn't bother to read the memo from the SNP's Zentrale Committee that said never to mention the little rogue nation ever again. When the party first proposed Gender Recognition Reform Malta was its toast.
./ Scotland's overlapping LGBTQ+ lobby groups cheered on Malta too. Here's Stonewall's @Cmacf76 saying Scots "should be looking to Ireland and Malta on their progressive laws for trans people". That'll be that err...mature democracy fantasy then. https://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/qa-colin-macfarlane-director-stonewall-scotland-1479402?r=1072
./ Here's @ScottishTrans suggesting we should follow the heroic lead of the Maltese. "Why can't Scotland do the same?". The public might be forgiven for assuming the Maltese (or the Irish for that matter) had risk assessed those new laws. They'd done nothing so boring.👇
./ When it comes to Malta the laws were rushed through to prove to the EU this relatively new member was suitably liberal not least because Malta just happened to have the strictest abortion laws in Europe and seemed to be under the repressive thumb of the Catholic church.
./ It's not as if the scale of corruption across Malta wasn't clear as the SNP attempted to emulate that country's gender laws. Here's a report for the EU in 2016. It beggars belief and cites everyone from the PM to Ministers in the Labour regime. https://transparency.eu/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Country_profile_Malta_2016.pdf
./ Then came the murder in 2017 of the journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. She was what we now call Gender Critical and had railed against how seemingly "progressive" Self-ID laws were used to try to whitewash the industrial scale thievery in Valetta. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/16/malta-car-bomb-kills-panama-papers-journalist
./ Helena Dalli, despite being a Minister in one of the most corrupt governments in Europe and being close colleagues with figures accused of involvement in Galizia's murder landed the job of EU Equalities Commisioner. Here she sets out her stall.
./ Yes you heard her say those words. "Equality is an infinite resource". What that means I have absolutely no idea, neither does Dalli. It's hot stale air. But how very Freudian of her to channel her Maltese Labour Party appreciation of infinite resources.
./ What does all this prove? Only that when politicians like Nicolson come over all pompous, assuring us that he and his agitated friends on @APPGLGBT have thought through the consequences of the laws they recommend to us little people ....don't believe a single word of it.
./ If Nicolson can't be bothered to do a google search under the words Malta and democracy while proclaiming the country as a model for us to follow you can be certain he has done nothing to assess the risks of the laws he recommends. Malta, mature? Yes, like a sewer.
./ Journalists and campaigners like Daphne Caruana Galizia by their dedication, courage and independence of mind help keep us safe. Lazy, self-righteous, grandstanding politicians like Nicolson do the opposite. https://www.daphne.foundation/en/contact-us
