the main concept of ngda act I & II is identity, something taemin constantly explores as an artist, presented through storytelling that encompasses:
- perception (self-perception & by others)
- transformation (different states of being)
- dualities (and multifacetism)
taemin describes it as the story of finding a new ego, in which the existing one goes through a self-destructive process that makes him hit rock bottom. this would make act I the dismantling of the self through catharsis, so act II can lead to enlightenment & birth of a new one
at first glance this is introduced/presented as simple dualities, innocent and suspect, victim and perpetrator, good and evil, as there’s taemin turning into a wolf donned in red chasing himself dressed in light colors (and pearls, which taemin said added to conjuring innocence)
however, there’s moments when evil taemin seems to be the one chased, and when the “victim” stares back... even if they are in either role, they’re both still taemin, so it’s a matter of perception which is which, and they’re both ultimately the same entity
in criminal the same thing happens, as you’re supposedly presented with taemin the criminal and taemin the victim... however, since this is all happening within taemin’s own self, they’re all part of his identity, meaning they all co-exist, as a multi-faceted being
perception comes to play once more because we are actually faced with four taemins, not two... two seemingly evil, and two seemingly innocent. the taemin in a dancing hell & the prisoner as the evil selves, and the taemin in the mannequin shop and in limbo as the innocent selves
however, they’re ALSO depicted as the opposite, the victimized taemin is seen holding a chainsaw, the one trapped in limbo becomes self-aware, the prisoner is seen hurt & struggling & so does the seemingly evil taemin in hell... why? because he is the same person, from diff povs
taemin travels through these states of self, represented by the use of the red cloth... which is both shown as something binding him (and the release leads to a new state of self) as well as a veil (through which he comes out transformed... because it’s a separation of states)
every time taemin comes out of the veil, he is different within the fixed role he was first assigned, the environment around him changes, ex: “innocent” taemin ends up in limbo, his eyepatch (evil) self is revealed, red is important throughout because it signifies transformation
tied into it there’s also the constant idea of sacrifice being needed to reach a new state... innocent taemin is seen asphyxiated and giving up his left eye, taemin in hell is seen before a maze, the lack of freedom ever-present beyond the narrative & message of the song itself
for taemin to be free catharsis must happen, to be free of the previous pre-conceptions of him as an artist, to be free of the selves of the past, and to rise up as something completely new, a whole new being born from the experience... and that’s where act II & “idea” come in
...and i’ll tie this in with part two of the thread tomorrow because im lazy
