Why the mindset that defense in college basketball is much better than defense in the NBA is flawed, a thread.
I’ve noticed that people think this way primarily because of disparities in scores, which is fair.
2019-20 avg points per game for an NBA team—111.8
2019-20 avg points per game for an NCAAB team—71.2
Large difference at over 40 PPG, but: 1) NBA games are 48 minutes; NCAAB games 40 min and 2) NBA has a 24 second shot clock; NCAAB 30s shot clock
NBA games fit more possessions than NCAAB games
2019-20 avg poss/game for an NBA team—100.3
2019-20 avg poss/game for NCAAB team—70.9
Every possession is an opportunity to score. So, NBA teams have nearly 30 more opportunities to score each game. We need to look at points per 100 possessions to get a better idea
2019-20 avg pts/100 poss for an NBA team—110.6
2019-20 avg pts/100 poss for an NCAAB team—98.7
About a 12 point difference, much closer. It’s up to you how you want to interpret the 12 point difference, but keep in mind that the NBA features better offensive skillsets, more advanced offensive coaching schemes, a larger share of 3-point attempts, and less turnovers.
Also, there are less stand-outs in college basketball, so it is easier for teams to focus on them.

If you standby the thought that defense is better in college, that’s fine. Just be aware it’s closer than u think, and it’s not fair to just look at the scores to form your opinion
