NEW SCIENCE | “Opportunities and Challenges in Achieving Co-Management in Marine Protected Areas in East Africa: A Comparative Case Study”. Out now in the Journal of the Indian Ocean, fresh off the press from WCS scientist @JeniOLeary

Scientists compared 2 East African MPAs to find out which management approach netted benefits for marine ecosystems & local communities. The Kenyan MPA took a top-down approach, while Tanzania’s MPA was designed for co-management - a more collaborative, community-led approach. 🤝
Takeaways:
➡️Co-management is critical to equitable MPAs, but neither MPA is achieving it
➡️Support for MPAs was equal, but perceived MPA benefits were higher in Tanzania’s co-man system
➡️This may be due to MPA's rural setting rather than mgmt approach

To implement successful co-management, study recommends:
👉Prioritizing community integration & involvement every step of the way
👉Investing in community leadership
👉Focusing on management of areas of joint interest to multiple parties
👉Establishing adequate MPA budgets
