Scientists compared 2 East African MPAs to find out which management approach netted benefits for marine ecosystems & local communities. The Kenyan MPA took a top-down approach, while Tanzania’s MPA was designed for co-management - a more collaborative, community-led approach.

Takeaways:
Co-management is critical to equitable MPAs, but neither MPA is achieving it
Support for MPAs was equal, but perceived MPA benefits were higher in Tanzania’s co-man system
This may be due to MPA's rural setting rather than mgmt approach
