Britney stepped into the spotlight at the age of 10 years old, when she was a contestant on Star Search in 1992. Britney had such a big and beautiful voice for such a young girl, and the talent she held was undeniable.
Britney had moved on to the Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club TV show in 1993 at age 11, and again shared to the world her immense talent. This is a clip of her and Justin Timberlake from this show.
Mickey Mouse Club ended in 1996, and in 1997 this gave 15-year old Britney Spears time to audition for record labels, to make it big as a singer like she always wanted. Britney sang songs by Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton, such as “I Have Nothing”. (Audition tape below)
To make her more marketable, Britney went from the “innocent, girl-next-door” to the then sex symbol at the ages of 16 and 17.
Throughout her late teens and early twenties, Britney genuinely embraced her sexuality. Britney thought girls all around the world that it was okay to feel beautiful, and that sexist men and judge mental women couldn’t tell them who to be, and who to dress for.
One day, the industry & the media decided Britney wasn’t so sexy anymore. Around 2004, Britney was now seen as fat, chubby a “has been”, white trash, or “slutty” despite being just releasing an album selling over 13 million copies, and looking amazing regardless of the press.
MadTV (2004) Bodyshaming Britney and dropping that she was “white trash” “chubbing up” and “lost it”.
In 2005, it became more and more personal. Since Britney was pregnant and had a child this year, her motherhood became the new hot topic for the tabloids.
In 2006, It became even uglier. Being surrounded by paparazzi, Britney tripped over the sidewalk while holding her baby. When Britney bent down, her underwear was visible, and one of the paparazzi yelled “There It Is!” referring to this “million dollar shot”.
Moments after, Britney was tricked into believing that the owner of a café would protect her and keep her away from the paparazzi, but the owner laughed at her as the paparazzi took photos of her at one of her lowest moments at the time.
Britney had a second child and was divorced this year. To no one’s surprise: The tabloids took whatever information they could get, and pushed it in their narratives.
This constant bullying from not only the press, but the world watching, seriously hurt Britney mentally. Watch as Britney shares a cry for help, simply to be left alone. It’s immoral that she even had to say this.
All Britney wanted was her baby, and to make his life as best as possible.
2007 is universally known as the worst year for Britney Spears in pop culture. It was estimated that a photo of her was worth $1 Million, and it was extremely typical for Britney to be followed by over 100 paparazzi, hoping that she would embarrass herself, somehow. (Real photos)
This was Britney going to a baby store at 12 PM noon. Nothing interesting, yet this happened to her several times a day.
Of course, the tabloids only became uglier and uglier.
On February 16th 2007, Britney shaved her head. Britney claimed she was tired of everyone touching her. She was right. Ever since she was 16 years old, all she did was what she was told by some man in a suit, making 7 or 8 figures off of sexualizing a teenager/ young adult.
Since this day, many female celebrities have done the same, but with no backlash.
This was not the case for Britney. Britney had become officially the biggest target in the world. She was officially named the most photographed person in the world, 9 years into her career.
In 2008, Britney was hospitalized for mental evaluation. The weight of the world had officially bent her till she broke. The paparazzi were unforgiving, and capitalized off of this genuinely awful tragedy. The pain on her face is heartbreaking in the last photos.
No one at all had a heart for Britney at this time. The media ripped her to shreds, families at home made fun of her or despised her, and the paparazzi were ruthless, even though they indeed caused this. Britney has said that at this time she felt so, so alone.
Put yourself in her shoes. This insane amount of negative attention would hurt anyone. No one sided with her. No one said anything at all positive. The things they said about her legally aren’t even allowed to be said in the media now. (Pictures with comments via Perez Hilton)
Britney came back in 2008 making what is known as possibly the biggest comeback of all time, breaking world records with her #1 single Womanizer, and #1 album Circus that year. “Old Britney” was back, she was beautiful, happy, and making music we all loved.
However, this same year, Britney was placed under a conservatorship, restricting her from handling any of her money, driving a car, seeing her children, owning a phone unmonitored, and so much more rights that many of us take for granted. (continued)
This is a voicemail of Britney making sure that she even has the rights to see her children.
To sum it up, nothing has changed. Britney still is not being given the human rights we all do, and is still constantly bashed by the media. The years may evolve for us, but Britney is stuck in 2008, and has been for the past 12 years. #FreeBritney
