A lot of her colleagues and current and former trainees have written about the sheer brilliance of @AngelikaAmon who we lost to cancer yesterday. Her science and ideas were inspiring. Yet what I will remember most were the dozen+ letters she wrote on behalf of her trainees 1/
It’s no secret she trained some amazing scientists. Yet she brought humanity to each of her letters reflecting on relationships with her people, talking about their contributions in an unvarnished yet complimentary way; you felt she was across the table making the case 2/
This was even true when there were multiple people from her lab competing for the same thing. That takes real skill, a deep compassion, and an above and beyond commitment to her trainees. Moreover, unlike other eminent scientists (Ahem) her letters were all about them not her 3/
For reasons of propriety I obviously cannot save these letters but I took away some amazing lessons from them. I don’t think any of her trainees doubted her commitment to them but it was even above and beyond what many of them might realize. 4/
We cannot all be like her in terms of science; there will only ever be one @AngelikaAmon but we should (can) all aspire to her level of mentorship /fin
