-A comprehensive thread running through every single musical number in a hypothetical stage play of the game-
It starts with a little Frisk wandering Mr. Ebott, unspoken, just them and the opening music. They peer down its crater until they accidentally trip and fall offstage- the scene change revealing they landed on a bed of golden flowers. Flowey is quick to welcome them.
The first would be Flowey talking to Frisk about the underground, a cute but threatening piccolo flute ditty singing about how glad he is to have them here. It could end with a rising leitmotif from Your Best Nightmare as Toriel scares him offstage and saves Frisk.
There could be a Ruins or Home musical segment in between as Toriel shows Frisk around the ruins properly. They could have a few adventures with the puzzles, and the scene changes to them settling into Frisk’s new home. Toriel is too excited to call them ‘her child’.
Frisk may have to talk aloud in this part, and say how they need to get back to their ‘real’ home. This upsets Toriel, and her song Heartbreak comes about- dramatically revealing her grief as a former mother, whilst fighting Frisk away from the exit with her fire magic.
Toriel gives in and allows Frisk to pass, but explains how Asgore will kill them if they get the chance. Frisk is scared and alone now in the Snowdin woods with a dark tree backdrop, they even turn back at one point, to find the iron door slammed shut. Then our skelebros come in!
Sans introduces himself and explains that his brother Papyrus is an aspiring human hunter, then Papyrus leaps on stage- He scours around as Frisk hurriedly hides behind a lamp, and he sees nothing. This could be a reoccurring theme throughout Frisk’s progression in Snowdin.
As soon as Papyrus sees Frisk when they arrive at Snowdin Town, he bursts into song and jovially monologues about how he needs to catch a human to impress Undyne. The whole lyrics of the song gives more ‘please walk into my trap’ vibes than ‘I’m going to catch you’.
After not being able to find it in himself to detain them, Papyrus and Sans give Frisk the directions to the surface, and say their goodbyes. As Frisk trails offstage, Papyrus ponders if he should have warned them about Undyne or Asgore, but decides to leave it.
Frisk briefly explores Waterfall but finds themselves already running into Undyne. I think in this version it makes more sense if she were alone, and not with Papyrus persuading her to leave Frisk alone. There’s rising tension as Frisk is hiding in the bushes.
As soon as Undyne has Frisk right where she wants them, she tears her helmet off, summons her spear, and roars her infamous battle cry. In her lyrics she heroically sings how Asgore needs Frisk’s soul to save monster kind, all the while jousting with them with her spear.
Panicked, Frisk barely escapes to Hotland and phones Papyrus, who then realised he should have mentioned Undyne in the first place. He explains how he’ll get her to change her mind, and ushers Frisk to pass through Hotland’s core, the final area.
It’s dawning on Frisk that the monsters in Hotland aren’t nearly as friendly, and going through the core means they’ll be at Asgore’s castle soon. Exhausted, Frisk collapses into a little laboratory to the East, scaring the hell out of the monster working in it.
Alphys reveals she works for Asgore and had been watching their adventures for a long time, but wants to help Frisk make it to the surface. There could be a bit of panto here as she mentions Metatton, the human killing robot she now regrets making, lurking behind them both.
Alphys shyly starts her own song before Mettaton bursts in with his Metal Crusher theme. It’s a grandiose, disney villain style solo about how happy it would make him for Frisk to die- not killing for Asgore or monster kind, but for his own benefit.
Frisk narrowly escapes, and now has Alphys (and maybe Papyrus and a converted Undyne?) on the phone with them to guide them through the final wakes of Hotland. Frisk runs into Mettaton twice, one being on his ‘cooking with Mettaton’ bit, and the second in his EX form.
Mettaton EX sings a much faster reprise of his original song, this time more theatric and more aggressive. He encourages Frisk to put on a show for the camera, and when caught out, Frisk kicks him in the back and his batteries fall to the floor.
Alphys rushes onstage and while thankful Frisk is alive, is also thankful that Mettaton EX is unharmed. She sets him aside and ushers Frisk to the castle, although as they approach, she falls unusually quiet.
Alphys confesses that not only will Asgore indeed try to kill Frisk to shatter the barrier, but also, Frisk would need to kill him if they wanted to cross for themselves. She ashamedly scurries offstage, only leaving Frisk, and the castle.
Asgore shows, solemnly accompanied by his Bergentrückung theme. He’s a kind old king that has never truly wanted to kill a human in his life. They have a moment of compassion before he explains that he has to do what he must. And if Frisk fights back, he holds no ill will.
As Asgore slams his trident, he melancholically sings about how he doesn’t quite want to do this to you. His theme is fast paced but saddening, seeing his pain in every swing. Just when you’re about to deal the final blow to him, the stage goes dark.
Now it’s at this point .. that I don’t know what could happen. The neutral ending has Flowey coming in and killing Asgore, Frisk kills Flowey, and they return to the surface alone. But the pacifist ending has Asriel, and ends up with the barrier broken.
Provided with how much story is really being told in the script, it might be possible for the play to end in a true pacifist style ending but without any mention of Asriel. It might also be possible that Frisk and Asgore find that they can do something to break the barrier.
Regardless, the gang can reconvene and share one last slow song about how nice it is to be free from the underground. Asgore and Undyne (and maybe even Mettaton) apologise for trying to kill Frisk, and they all live happily ever after in their new homes.
END SHOW, STAGE CREDITS, EVERYONE DOES A BIG BOW. I SPENT 2 HOURS ON THIS THREAD. WHY.
