Actually, every single former member of the US armed forces who wants to be considered a "leftist" should feel shame for what they were a part of. That's like ground level entry for redemption and justice. And then guess what, you're still not owed it.

Stop making excuses. You were a tool for one of the worst empires to exist. You MUST be upset with your past decision. You MUST now be actively working against that empire.
The soldiers and their US socdem supporters don't get to set the terms for what redemption and justice look like. You especially don't get to claim redemption and then continue to be a tool for empire in other ways beyond the military, including being anti-communist.

The obsession the Left has in the US for redeeming bad people/enemies is a product of propaganda. In the media: Getting you to feel bad for the bad guy, not putting that bad guy through the proper path of justice and rehabilitation... it's led to you defending war criminals.
