"forever rain" by RM ( @BTS_twt ): An explanatory thread-

P.s: strictly based on my interpretation
'forever rain' is predominantly a song of loneliness n concealed depression- the kind that goes unnoticed by the mass, courtesy to the sufferer's pretence, the kind where the sorrow n trauma is suppressed n only unleased during moon hours or episodes of pathetic fallacy-
When nature empathises w us in our misery, the kind that is exposed involuntarily in gloomy situations, when we choose to slow down, to rest, to breathe properly amidst chaos, to feel our own pain- all of it expressed brilliantly by the one n only n Im in love w Joon's mind+
The way I see it, Joon is addressing 'rain' as his friend all through the song, n he wishes for his friend to stay by him longer, for as long as possible, "I wish it rains all day, cuz id like someone to cry for me", Joon raps, cuz he feels comforted by its presence, he can+
Cry his pain out, for a change, instead of holding it all back: for once, he feels less noticed, less highlighted, n more of the human that he is w concerns n worries similar to that of ours n even more cuz he is also an artist, a renowned n brilliant one at that, n above all+
He is a leader n the responsibilities of being a leader in itself are smth beyond our comprehensive abilities. In spite of his high n dignified status n additional worries, Joon never fails to make us feel included cuz afterall he too is just an ordinary guy, but he's doing+
Extraordinary things. In this track, Joon stands representative of everyone of Us who experience pathetic fallacy ( in simple words, nature empathsing with us in our misery), he stands representative of us, who unleash their demons when it rains cuz as Joon states+
"Cuz the umbrella would cover the sad face": the umbrella is probably symbolic of the darkness that falls on removal of the limelight, in the superficial aspect, on a deeper note, it could be his own darkness, n our own individual darkness, that all of us, incl. Joon hold within+
N he can unleash our demons, n no one will notice, as Joon raps,"Cuz in the rain people are busy minding themselves"- the little yet hugely significant n general truths of our lives that Joon puts in his lyrics is perhaps his way of making us feel included everytime. This line+
Is not only the truth of only his life but ours too: while some relax by resting, some relax by unleashing their pain, we are busy minding ourselves but w rain being our mutual company. When it rains, we slow down, in the sense- we take a step back n feel our pain, we slow down+
To cry, to expose our pain, Joon plans to do the same: to take a step back from his fast-paced life of a heavily guarded, thoroughly watched n meticulously monitored idol rapper, for living n breathing a bit slowly while it rains cuz no one will be watching him+
Then: it shows how crucial n valuable this moment is for him, how crucial it is for him to live a bit slowly for a while so he can catch up w his emotions that are running as fast as the world- the only way he can feel his emotions to the core n relieve himself accordingly+
N it also goes for us cuz more often than not, in order to keep up w the world, we lose touch w our inner selves, we accept our miseries w a numb face until we can hold it back no more n express, by slowing down, by stepping back. Joon raps, "now everything goes back to its+
Place", perhaps referring to him putting his shattered pieces in place for recovery, for healing. When it rains, the dark clouds form a canopy, perhaps by "shadow reflecting in the sky" he feels his misery reflected in the form of dark clouds cuz shadows are dark, n smth latched+
Onto to us, much like eternal gloom, perhaps he sees his perpetual misery reflected in the dark clouds as it cries out in the form of rain, the rain that becomes his friend who witnesses Joon's tears. Joon talks about his pain being reflected in the sky but the next moment he+
Talks about standing on the darkness, depicting the heights n depth of his pain, basically the range of his suffering that goes sky high n deeper into the ground where it's all dark, not just his pain, but everyone experiencing pain of this range, which is greatly subjective+
Yet never less, meaning one's heights n lows of torment might not match another's but to the sufferer it's the greatest range, to them it's never less: smth subjective yet never less- pain is pain n that's incomparable. These two lyrics are greatly reflective of the torment+
Experienced by quite a few, Joon understands that n continues to stand representative of them, as its the kind of pain that can bring us down on our knees in grief n Joon is no different. He understands it, he feels it, he's experienced it, he is voicing it out for all who are+
Scared to do the same, scared of not being taken seriously. Its a crucial situation, a vulnerable moment, essential for slowing down in life so we, incl. Joon himself, can pour hearts out. Joon wishes for the rain to slow down as he takes a step back from his fast-paced life, so+
That he can have all the time he needs for himself.
He proceeds to state that he does feel like the rain is his friend, who's come to check in on him, to ask if he's doing well. The question is as simple as it can possibly get, however, Joon's response remains complicated+
He admits how he feels bout being here: he feels that life has taken him hostage as he proceeds to say, "I don't live cuz I can't die, but I'm chained to something"- he believes the only reason why he is still alive is cuz he is chained to smth, which is perhaps his purpose in+
Life, or perhaps the duties of life he is entitled to, perhaps his responsibilities, perhaps our love for him- it could be anything n everything but Joon chooses to be as ambiguous n vague as the possible meaning of "something" here. He clearly understands that he is entangled+
To smth thats keeping him going, perhaps he knows what it is, n chooses to keep it to himself so that we can perceive it in our ways cuz its rather subjective, or maybe he himself doesn't realize what it is, but he understands n knows there is smth giving him reasons to go+
On, smth he is entangled w, smth which is the cause of his existence. Life has taken him hostage, to keep him in security so that he can't escape until the purpose is fulfilled. The fact that this applies to most of us only shows the accuracy of the statement, it's like we cant+
Leave cuz we owe some entity smth n that's stopping us for ending it all, quite like being chained to smth. Joon wishes if only could someone embrace his weary soul, welcome his exhausted self like we embrace the raindrops falling on us, knocking us, kissing us: exhausted from+
All the responsibilities assigned to him, exhausted from being under the limelight all the time, exhausted from life. He wishes if someone would gently embrace him, perhaps he seeks to be the rain for a day n comfort himself as friend but he knows he can't, so he requests the+
Rain to stay by his side for as long as possible, w/o asking questions, for he feels less lonely then, he feels a bit more comforted then, he can cry to himself amidst the rain, he can unleash his pain, w/o anyone noticing him, he just wishes for it to rain forever, on and on+
Whilst he lives in this "ashy" world: "ashy world" could be indicative of two things: the ash colour of nature when it rains heavily, it becomes difficult to see thru it, the surroundings become all greyish-white, perhaps Joon wants to live in a world where it rains forever+
It could also symbolise the grey zone of our lives where the good things meet the dark, the connecting zone b/w the good n bad, cuz everything has two sides to it, or perhaps he wishes to stay in this zone w equal proportions of the good n the bad, or maybe both of two options+
Its interesting to note how Joon uses 'forever' twice in this verse, once he requests for it to rain 'forever' then he says he knows 'forever' is an unfortunate lie, implying that even if he wants for it to rain for an indefinite period of time, it won't happen cuz eventually it+
Would come to an end, so it's only a wishful thinking. Sometimes even we experience wishful thinking- praying for the impossibly impossible, sometimes we might even catch ourselves praying for the night to stay longer, the rain to fall longer, the daylight to stay longer+
In spite of knowing the chances range from thin to nil. Joon raps the line, "I know that there's no forever" right after he says "ashy" world perhaps implying his awareness regarding the mortality of the situation which is quite unfortunate. So he wishes for it to slow down+
Instead, so the eventual end comes around a bit delayed, he can step out of his fast-paced life to cry out his pain for as long as he wants, its thoroughly amazing how even we wish to do the same but end up skipping most of the times due to work/study load, the fact that Joon is+
Doing it or trying to do it is enough reasons for us to sit w ourselves n cry out our pain, there's a lot we are concealing which we need to let out n Joon is indirectly telling us to do the same cuz that will bring comfort at the end of the day
"When it rains, it pours, When+
It rains, it pours, it pours"- Joon uses pour for two cases, the first case indicates the actually pouring of the rain, the second is indicative of the pouring out of emotions from ourselves n the subsequent pouring of tears which is highlighted by the second "it pours".
When he repeats "Forever rain", Joon perhaps wants to emphasize on how it's all bounded in a loop- our pain never truly goes away, it occupies some portion of our mind n heart: the dark corners, it never truly fades n from time to time it surfaces n the whole process of+
Suffering n unleashing repeats itself, it rains forever since our misery is perpetual, it doesn't, however, happen at one go, it happens in intervals, courtesy to our eternal pain, the rain lasts forever, bounded in a time loop. The other reason behind repeating "forever rain"+
Could be Joon's attempt at emphasising the need of a friend (cuz even healers need healers n that's an unsaid fact), highlighting the need to open up to one's own self from time to time, taking a step back in life- this is smth bout which he talks in Zero O'clock too, finding+
Solace in rain. Joon opens the track w the sound of rainfall, which is smth we hear at the end of 'everythingoes' as well, so perhaps the prev track is transitioning into this which makes v much sense considering how this track n the album as a whole ends w "pour on me"- Maybe+
Joon is asking the falling rain to conceal his sorrowful tears by pouring on him the first time he says this, the next time is perhaps implying how he wishes his misery to be washed away completely by the falling rain which he considers his friend, that comes to him now n then💜
In conclusion, Joon is revealing all about his concealed loneliness n depression in the most poetic n heartfelt way possible such that it resonates deep w the souls of the listeners. Through this track he not only speaks bout his own stories of sorrow n grief but becomes the+
Voice for many sufferers out there who feel along the lines but are never able to express, afraid they might not be taken seriously. Joon brings up the concept of pathetic fallacy which is basically the theme of the track for highlighting the consequences of sequential+
Self demolition, either voluntary involuntary, and the demands of the situation which must be tended to immediately to prevent further self-damage for we all have a limit to our sustainability. Joon wishes for us to take a step back from our lives for taking care of ourselves💜
