In 2000 Serbia was ruled by a brutal despot, surrounded by corrupt cronies, supported by a profligate family whose outrageous luxury and entitled nepotism was legendary. He was vicious, petty and unprincipled.

He played the patriot, but was interested only in his wealth and power. His "homeland security" ministry was his violent tool of oppression. He held his Army in contempt, using it only to support his grip on power. But....

The Serbian people decided not to submit. Conservative and liberal politicians, students, unions, farmers, workers, urban and rural, formed coalitions to unseat him. Facing an election, he tried to cheat. They resisted; he failed. He tried to unleash his security services..

on the Opposition. He failed -- they refused. He tried to use the courts. He failed.He lost the election. But at first, he refused to leave. People rose up. Students, old people, miners, rail workers, marched on Belgrade. He called up the Army and the Interior Ministry...

...the soldiers and police stood down. Many cheered the opposition. The Opposition held, remained solid and courageous.

The Dictator fled. Eventually he was arrested, and faced trial on war crimes. He died in prison.

The Opposition was led by a loose federation of young people, called OTPOR. They worked with politicians three times their age, and poles apart on most policies. Tough union mineworkers joined arms with scruffy college students.....

Old men and woman, some who remembered Hitler and Tito, worked with elementary school teachers and hipsters from Belgrade. The rallying cry of the Opposition was "GOTOV JE!", which means "HE'S FINISHED!." President Trump ..... #HESFINISHED.
