Tim Davie emails BBC staff to say there is no ban on staff attending "pride parades". He blames "inaccurate commentary" for spreading concern. This presumably includes the multiple briefings to that effect given by managers to staff in different BBC newsrooms across the country.
Now the crux - and what got lost in some of the coverage yesterday - is whether Pride is a political event. Davie says there is no ban on attending marches that are "clearly celebratory". An issue is around "politicised" LGBT issues such as rights in N Ireland and trans rights.
In the director general's own words to staff: "Attending Pride parades is possible within the guidelines, but due care needs to be given to the guidance and staff need to ensure that they are not seen to be taking a stand on politicised or contested issues."
