As some people know, I suffer from Type 1 diabetes, so here's the effects of it and living with it every day

(A thread)
Type 1 Diabetes is where our bodies don't have the ability to produce any insulin whatsoever.

We're able to eat anything we want (within reason) but because our bodies don't produce the insulin required, we have to inject it into us.
This can mean having to have multiple injections per day.

Me personally I have to inject myself 5 times a day sometimes more dependant on how the levels maintain themselves.

One for each meal, one for my body to maintain for 24 hours and one if my levels need to come down.
Now what we do sometimes have is a Hypoglycaemia (hypo for short).

This is where our blood sugars drop below 4mmol/L.

A hypo often causes changes in mood or attitude. For example, you could be out in public having a hypo and be acting completely different.
If you know anyone with type 1 diabetes these are the signs that they are having a hypo:

Feeling shaky

Lack of concentration

Sweating

Being anxious or irritable

Going pale

Palpitations and a fast pulse

Lips feeling tingly

Blurred vision

Being hungry

Headaches
Diabetics also have to be careful when drinking alcohol.

Drinking alcohol as a diabetic increases the risk of a hypo. If a diabetic drinks alcohol, they have to regularly check blood sugars more than they usually would.

Having alcohol on an empty stomach can also cause hypos.
As someone who suffers from type 1 diabetes, it pains me to see how uneducated people are.

It's a serious lifelong condition. As of yet there is no cure.

Schools do a terrible job of teaching it. I recall doing one lesson on it throughout all of school.
And even in that lesson we only touched lightly on it.

There was nothing taught in depth. That's part of the reason why I'm doing this thread.

The government must do more. Simple as really.
Now the complete opposite of a hypo is when blood glucose levels are well above what they should be.

Having high blood glucose levels can cause a sudden mood drop. It can also cause us to be extremely short tempered.

We may take a joke the wrong way because we are unaware.
Type 1 diabetes is more commonly diagnosed at a young age compared to being diagnosed with it later on in life.

This doesn't mean that you can't get it later on in life but it's chances are very slim.
Diabetes isn't a visible condition in the slightest.

Injecting insulin in public is a rather uncomfortable thing.

People are that uneducated, that they don't know it's insulin that we are injecting.

So we don't inject in public. Instead we find somewhere more private.
Sometimes, if we are out we get food but don't inject until after we've ate it because there is no quiet place to do it.

Which is not the best, because it's advised to always inject insulin before eating.

But the sight of getting abuse from uneducated people isn't pretty.
