I deactivated Facebook because I "self-diagnosed" that my screen time was too high. Since deactivating, I've discovered that my screen time really didn't take a dive. I've deduced that I have just converted Facebook time into Twitter. So, I'm taking a break from this forum 1/18
I've cleansed the pallet, and done a bulk delete of all tweets as I think I went against the spirit of my handle at times and got sucked into too much negativity. So this thread will be all that sits on my page until I choose to re-engage (probably next winter sports season) 2/18
Though, I will be deleting the app from my phone. Which will require me to make a conservative effort to pull out the old school computer (Old school being the 2018 MacBook) I just want to leave my final thoughts on the 2020 landscaped (my views being primarily sports based) 3/18
2020 has been a year like no other, that much I won't get 'atted' on. However we got to this point (that's not my contention), we are here now. Let's push together and become stronger for having made it through the adversity. (That's the life stuff, let's get to sport) 4/18
The AFL is the industry leader. They will take some catching, they didn't achieve that success overnight though. in fact, it's not all that long ago that footy was still a part-time sport for those at the highest level. But then came growth, the 'done thing' 5/18
had to take a backseat as the state competitions banded together and formed the national comp. Ever since that change, the game has progressively evolved, there are now 4 new teams since 1990, some located in markets you would have never anticipated. 6/18
This level of unparalleled success, can only come down to their acknowledgment that the product needed to compliment the commercial market. That's why they have the best broadcast deal, that's why they have the best crowd numbers, that's why the athletes are the best paid. 7/18
Decisions are sometimes made that upon inception are not palatable, but the decisions are made with largely commercial motivations (and where necessary safety) ... That commercial success is what ensures the longevity and standard of the game moving forward. 8/18
So, I'll now change lanes and get to my point (you've already stopped reading, nonetheless), netball is my other favourite sport and it also happens to be the only sport that goes toe to toe with the AFL as far as participation goes, but to date has not been able to match 9/18
the commercial impact that the AFL has had (key measurements (IMO) being ratings, broadcast rights deal & player wages). Enter 2020 & I can genuinely see netball in Australia taking considered steps to lay the foundation for future success that (who knows) could one day 10/18
parallel that of a product like the AFL. The ruthless, unapologetic ambition of the commission to do this, without regard for criticism they knew would come their way was outstanding. I listened to @marinasgo on @TheNetballShow this evening. As a result I am so pumped 11/18
for 2021 and beyond. I highly recommend for people to have a listen, Marina pulls no punches and shines a light on the complexities of the situation and motivations behind the decision making. The willingness to innovate to ensure the future of the game is tremendous and 12/18
Netball Australia is lucky to have someone like a Marina Go at the forefront. At the end of the day, this is just the opinion of one man, I call it as I see it, through my eyes, big picture thinking! I get that not everyone feels the same way I do, and that's cool too. 13/18
But I felt my positive response to the current state of play, deserves just as much airtime as the... well not so positive stuff on this forum. Anyway, that's it for me for a while. (unless I reply to a few "attings") 14/18
For anyone interested in my ramblings I have written a few pieces via LinkedIn on similar subject matter, I'll place links to those below. Cheers! 15/18
