Adoptees: what’s an experience you’ve had that none of your non adoptee community have had?
I’ll start - I’m Chinese Indian but my adopted name was Marie Wotherspoon - to really experience that if you’re white imagine your name is Mei Lee Wong or Rishi Patel and imagine how introductions go...
Realising my friends and family don’t recognise/know/remember I’m Chinese Indian. Again If you’re white flip the script and imagine being told you’re Chinese or Indian not British. Confused yet?
Embarking on answering the “where are you from?” question knowing a stranger is two questions away from the “I don’t know - I’m adopted” answer and I’m going to have to make them feel ok about it
