A very important rant 1/?

If you want more proof of how p/dophilla is romanticized by some people, you can apparently go ask some of the PJO fandom.

This thread came to be because of a post involving Luke Castellan that I'll be discussing more here. Let's start.
2/? Once again... spoiler warning for the series.
Now, first off let's start with these four images:
3/?
Okay so. Luke was round 19 when all of this began to my memory. It's stated somewhere that he DID used to like Thalia before she became, you know, a tree. However it's implied(?) that he developed a crush on Annabeth Chase sometime between then and when he first left camp.
4/?
I don't remember if he hinself ever stared it, but I remember that in the staff of Hermes it was said that he had developed a crush on her.
There's a 7 year age difference between them.
5/?
I also remember Annabeth saying something along the lines of "her first crush decided to like her--right before he died"
So that was confirmed.
Now, while I do agree that this is mostly MAJOR manipulation and less "grooming", keep in mind that it's ROMANTIC manipulation.
6/?
Which he not only did to Annabeth up until the very END of his life when he asks her if she loves(loved? Idr one or the other) him.
Annabeth replies with a grey area lie "as a brother" because while she did once like him, she had clearly gotten over him for the most part.
7/?
I'm sure all of the bs he did helped that decision on her part a little. However there are a lot of things here left up to interpretation. Like WHY he asked her that or why she said what she said in reply. I personally believe she answered him with what she believed in that--
8/?
Moment. He was like a brother that raised her. She also likely wanted to give him a little peace of mind that she had gotten past her crush, assuming Luke was actually worried about that.
But then we have to circle back around to why he asked her that to begin with.
9/?
Two points I'd like to bring up here are his crush on Annabeth and his manipulation of Silena Beauregard.
Silena confessed to falling for Lukes charm and that's why she agreed to be his spy. Again, even if this wasn't meant to imply abromantic undertone--with everything else
10/?
That's been stated here, I think it implies enough that it was once again romantic manipulation.
I haven't read through the series in quite awhile, despite the fact that I'm attempting to read it through from the beginning at the moment, actually.
I've only managed to get
11/?
Through the first book so far, however. ADHD sucks.
So if I misremember anything--please don't persecute me. Just tell me what I got wrong in the canon. I'm cool with accepting my mistakes on that front.
NOW that aside--I remember that in the canon as I was reading it
12/?
That it CAME OFF TO ME as romantic manipulation.
Silena was possibly 17 at the time of her death but I swore I remember her being 16.
Luke would still be 23 by the end of it. I stand by the fact that he is in his 20s. I don't care if he stopped aging because of Kronos.
13/?
Now. Let's stop circling around this.
Luke was romantically manipulative towards Annabeth Chase and Silena Beauregard. That doesn't necessarily mean he groomed them because that's a very strong and specific word to use here. However that does make him a predator.
14/?
It is wrong, and creepy, and should be acknowledged. Luke preyed upon minors in a romantic context as a war strategy. And that's just with taking out his crush on Annabeth out of the equation.
It also gets even worse if you notice that his actions towards Percy are also
15/?
Incredibly... flirtatious.
I'm about 80% sure Rick has spoken on this aspect before and said that wasn't his intention when he wrote it. I have no proof of that but it's a vague memory and I 100% accept that all interactions with Percy and Luke were never meant to be taken
16/?
In that context! But you have to admit they do have those undertones of just. Creepy.
Moving on.
Why is this important?
Because. While it might seem like a callout for Rick as a writer--it's not. At all. I hardly think he would have written anything like that with intent.
17/?
It's actually not even entirely a callout for the fandom, but something that I noticed within it that can be said for multiple fandoms.
The romanticization and/or the apologists of p/dophilia/p/dophiles.

Why though? What am I even talking about?
Well it's about the first picture in part two of this thread.

That image is actually a cropped picture of a post I saw on Instagram.
Where the comments were filled with some people that had more than one braincell, but a majority of them were denying Lukes romantic manipulation.
19/?
Some were just saying that grooming was a strong word, which I agree with, but others were denying outright that his actions made him a p/dophile.
Which I personally disagree with as he was a 20 year old that manipulated minors romantically, preyed upon them using his
20/?
Charm, and had a crush on a girl that was 7 years younger than him.
I'm just saying that if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
I'm sure some people are going to argue with me if this gets noticed about how because he did these things doesn't mean he's--
21/?
"Outright attracted to minors" and I hate to be the one to say this but... Predators are more than just M*Ps that are loud and proud of liking minors. That isn't how it works. If it was grooming wouldn't be a thing.
I don't want to educate all of you about how that sort of
22/?
Attraction works. I'm just going to leVe it by saying that any adult with romantic intent towards minors automatically makes them p/dophiles. That's just the truth. Adults should never for any reason have any romantic/s/xual intentions with minors.
These facts automatically
23/?
Make Luke fall into this category.

Now while this is good and well enough "We get it. Some kids were being dumb and defending Luke. Why does this matter?"

For a few reasons actually. But I want to start with the one that lead me to typing this monster of a thead.
24/?
Hazel Levesque and Frank Zhang.
Hazel is, I believe, 14 in canon? She could possibly be 13 but the wiki says 14. That could be current though. So let's just assume 13.
And then there's Frank. Who was 16 by the time Annabeth and Percy fall.

Again, correct me if I'm wrong.
25/?
But these two are actually what lead me to typing this and really thinking hard about the subject matter at hand.

Hazel and Frank are both in a relationship and I'm not sure if many of you will remember this but back when they first became canon the fandom wasn't exactly...
26/?
Thrilled.
A good select few still aren't. They claim the age difference makes them uncomfortable.
Which is an age difference of two to three years if my age stamps are correct.

I believe for the most part people got over their initial unease about them being canon but--
27/?
There are still people uncomfortable about it.

This lead me to wondering how people could be uncomfortable with one but either not notice, not care about, or even DEFEND another.

Then it clicked to me.
Two are teenagers, a big demographic of this series.
28/?
And the other two are two characters that had been friends for years before the story even starts being told.
People would think that Annabeths attraction towards Luke was normal and fine, so long as it isn't acted upon by the elder of the two.
29/?
However when you think about the context of Luke liking Annabeth back it should make you a little bit uncomfortable. For most it doesn't. For most it isn't thought twice about.
Why? Because /Lukes age was never seen as a major point in his story/. He's seen as just another--
30/?
Demigod being stupid. Most of us associate that with being a minor because that's what CHB is. A camp of kids.

However Hazels age is a fairly big point in her plot seeing as she's "out of time" (Not sure if that's the canon way of saying it or if it's just something I say.)
31/?
We tend to think more of Hazel and Frank as teenagers and that makes their age difference stick out more to us than Luke and Annabeths because it wasn't a heavy focus.

Now while I can't say whether or not the same people are uncomfortable with one duo over the other, I--
32/?
Still think my argument has merit here just by the fact that I hadn't thought twice about how creepy the age difference was between Luke and Annabeth and nor had my roommate.

Starting out this thread I wanted to speak on the apologists of Lukes behaviors and their arguments
