In my previous firm, we had hired a Head of US Government Affairs to handle Washington affairs. Andy was formerly Bill Clinton’s special assistang on legislative affairs. He briefed our senior leadership team on Trump and his style https://twitter.com/jbhavan/status/1322068150813294593
During his first campaign, Trump’s team did a poll on what topics concerned Americans most. They arrived at 10 issues. Trump said only focus on two; Security & Economy
Security = let’s make it difficult for everybody to come in so we protect ourselves. Economy = let’s wage war against China. To marry this, slogan MAGA was born. Catchy.
His campaign style was find the largest venue, pack as many people and say anything he wants. He knew that people forget and wont hold him accountable, especially his made up as you go facts. Except media, whol he hated with a vengeance.
Hillary, meanwhile held focused campaigning, tailoring message for different crowds. This took time and effort. Trump had none of that.
We then studied his tweets. We showed our senior leadership a slide with all his real time tweets over period of one week. Asked audience to guess how many tweets there were. It was 77, average 11 per day.
We then asked the audience if anybody remembered what Trump tweeted about 2 days ago. Nobody could. Because that’s how he is. Random. On the day we were there, he was having a row with Trudeau. Immediately after he was endorsing somebody for state governor.
Trump is an interesting case study on communications, perception & campaigning. Not condoning it but clearly worked first time around. And carries weight with part of USA you dont see in news and on TV (that’s large segment of population).
Finally, sorry @jbhavan for hijacking your tweet with essay on US politics.
