Want to be making more content without putting in more time?

I’ve started using techniques from Deep Work by Cal Newport and it’s made a huge difference.

It can for you too in these 7 ways.

What is deep work?

Deep work is uninterrupted time working on one task for at least 90 minutes.

Setting this time aside with minimal distraction has a super positive impact on overall productivity and it’s how writers like @StephenKing and @tferriss get so much done.

First is attention residue which I gave a full thread recently.

Basically, switching tasks every 30 minutes eats your production.

Instead, batch tasks together and don’t leave a task without documenting or finishing it.

This alone will help you create more in your work

#2 is that we need to be all in or all out.

“Working” with an email tab open and slack notifications in your face isn’t going well.

While in deep work, shut out everything that you can.

When not in deep work, relax and be hyper-accessible for colleagues and boss.

3 is the Chain technique popularized by @JerrySeinfeld!

Get a calendar and mark a big red X on days when you accomplish your deep work goal (you can do this for any goal)

After a few days with the X, you’ll like seeing it and it’ll become more fun.

4. Use your work breaks to go for walks and think about your work problems.

Getting this context shift is good for creativity and helps to solve them.

Also, (little bonus) taking walks is good for your health and heart.

Lesson 5. When you’re not at work, stop working.

Close the laptop and sign out of email. This gives your mind a chance to rest and recharge.

You’ll be more effective tomorrow because of it.

Your quality of life will improve, too. You’ll have better spare time.

Don’t use a tool just because it has some benefit.

This “any benefit” mindset ignores the flaws and the opportunity cost of using that tool.

I spend more time on Medium and Twitter than all my other social platforms combined.

I’m discerning.

You should be, too.

(8/10)
Send better emails.

Stop sending emails that are vague like:
“Hi Tom, can we sync this week?”

vs.

“Hi Tom, I need 30 minutes of your help to chat about XYZ. I could do Monday or Friday at 1 or 2. Can you let me know today what time works?”

Be more precise with it.

Deep work is huge for content creators.

Putting these techniques in place will make you produce so much more.

Change your habits and change your life.
