13 years ago I went to a discussion and panel hosted by of the biggest news papers on “the death of the press” at the time I was against it. But seeing what’s happened over the last 13 years and the misuse of their power.I say let them die in a hole over the next 2 generations.
There needs to be a shift from where we are now to something completely different. I’m hoping people will look back and study how the press brainwashed a nation, spread miss information on a huge scale and were never held to account.
The irony of it is people pay money to be misinformed. Even when the evidence-shows it’s wrong and apologies in tiny corner of the back page they will still believe and spout disinformation. I’m wondering how many gererations it will take to reform or stop buying it...
I’m hoping the digital landscape and the political landscape change so much over the next few years it really highlights to the younger generations that they want no part of it. Im hoping they see the damage it has done to their futures and they dismantle it bit by bit.

For interest these are the most read papers from January this year. The top papers are mainly conservative leaning and backed the party in the 2019 elections
Not to be ignored is the rise of The metro and the free newspapers. Are fewer people not choosing to pay for news in recent years?
And last but not least a graph showing the circulation of news papers from 1956 - 2019. It’s a steep decline for some and we see that the Daily mail circulation has been steady. The Conservative press still selling more than liberal/ central publications
According to this article. The Daily Mail had the most sanctions from the Press Regulator IPSO for 3 years in a row. But still remains steady and one of the most circulated news papers. If true How are they still allowed to distribute unreliable data?

And a better question is why are we still buying it?
Here’s a little more about IPSO and press standards organisation. Also has a list of rulings on the site and a page where you can make a complaint

Here’s a report from OfCom in 2017. It sets out that most people get the majority of news from the BBC. Especially the retired and beyond bracket. Papers only made up 40% of the sources. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0024/116529/news-consumption-2018.pdf
When it looked at trustworthiness, quality and accuracy. Magazines scored higher than any other news platform.
When looking across the demographics in age groups there has been a decline in viewing of news on Tv & in papers within the younger age groups. When the next generation has gone, the media landscape is likely to change dramatically
When looking at the OfCom statistics 📈 you realise the BBC is the most used for news across all demographics. Is this an argument for it to become a truly independent body detached from the government?

The OfCom data also showed that younger people get their news from Facebook and Twitter. Especially breaking news. But also showed they weren’t confident about its reliability. After the Facebook and Cambridge analitica scandals what does this mean for the future of quality info?
