NB Thread: It has been brought to our attention that ANC intends to hand over power to the IEC to determine how all our future elections in SA are conducted. This would most likely mean that SA will adopt an electronic voting system and could mean that the ANC never loses power.
In clause 14 of the Electoral Laws Amendment Bill it states that ‘Despite anything to the contrary contained in this Act or any other law, the Commission may prescribe a different voting method.’. This clause gives the IEC sole discretion to determine how we vote.
This would bypass parliament's oversight role as the IEC is accountable to the national government. This Bill is currently under consideration by parliament and the deadline for public comment is today at 16:00. What can you do?
You can send an email to [email protected] and state your opposition to the bill and also ask that the deadline be extended.
A very short window was given for public comment, this bill is of such great importance that we must allow more time for South Africans to participate in the democratic process as is enshrined in the Constitution.
Evil prevails when good people stand by and do nothing. So do not just stand by, send your submission, and encourage others to do the same.
