The Oscar race flattens every beautiful thing by turning it into a pointless contest to find a consensus majority. There will not be a better film than #mank this year. No, it won't win the Oscar but that doesn't mean anything. It's a masterpiece. 1/6
I made the mistake of searching Mank reactions and got the typical robotic array of responses of its Oscar prospects. That is the wrong way to watch this movie - and frankly any movie. It robs it and you of the joy and glory of what art is supposed to be. 2/6
It's kind of like extracting sex for the sperm to use later or freezing your eggs. It serves a function but it can't replicate what sex actually is.Mank is a glorious, tragic depiction of a man who had one shot at greatness and not only was it greatness, it was Citizen Kane. 3/6
By contrast, the Oscar race is a sterile and pointless go through the motions routine that takes you nowhere you ever remember. After the excitement wears off there's nothing left except counting what you got right and what you got wrong. Never forget that movies are art. 4/6
And the whole point of the Oscars is to reward the magnificence of skill and risk. #DavidFincher is a maestro behind the camera and has made one of his best films. Movies have to mean something for the Oscars to mean anything. It's the movies, not the trophies. 5/6
I can't wait to write about this movie.I can't wait to invite people in to see what I see, what makes it great, what makes Fincher great, what makes Citizen Kane great. I mostly love that there are still artists out there willing to reach this high to make something this good. 6/6
Incredible score by @trent_reznor and Atticus Ross. Amanda Seyfried is wonderful as Marion Davies, Charles Dance and Hearst. Don't miss it.
